Reclassifiying to MOS 35P via DA 4187 (Voluntary Reclassification without Reenlistment)

Here is an example DA 4187 for voluntary reclassification into MOS 35P as per the guidance from our career counselor.

(Click here for the PDF document)

To submit a voluntary reclassification request, the Soldier must NOT be within his or her reenlistment window per MILPER message11-126.

However, if he is not in his re-enlistment window, according to paragraph 4B3 "(3) SOLDIERS MAY REQUEST RECLASSIFICATION INTO CMF 18, 12D, 12P, 31D, 35L, 35P, 37F, 38B, 79R (SSG ONLY), AND 89D REGARDLESS OF THE IN/OUT CALLS FOR CURRENT PMOS."

  1. I am a future soldier going into the army as a 35P later this year. After BCT I'll ship out to Monterey, Ca for DLI. I'm pretty excited about going there and learning a new language regardless if the army selects it for me. My questions to you are " What was life at DLI like?", "Did you enjoy your time there as well as your language?", "How did you feel when you were assigned Persian-Farsi?". Maybe you could make a post addressing these questions, but regardless Thank You for your informative posts.

    2. Probably quite difficult if not impossible, if you just graduated.

  3. How about for reclassification for sgt who is not on the window for reenlistment?

  4. SFC J,
Thanks for the information posted on this blog. With your information and a lot of helpful guidance from the Enlisted Language Chief and the 35P Program Manager, I was able to get my situation straightened out as well as another Soldier's in my BN. I'll be headed to DLI in a couple of months to learn KP. Thanks again for all of the helpful information.

  5. SFC J,

First off, love the site! I found it because I started doing researching today after noticing MILPER message 11-126. I talked to my retention nco, but she needs to do research as well. Here is the question...I am a SSG with 14 years TiS. Can I (And if so, how) reclass to 35P?

    ReplyDelete
  6. Glad the site is proving useful. Honestly I'm not a 79S (career counselor) so I'm not the best person to ask. if your Carew counselor is not moving fast enough I'd talk to your higher level retention. Most retention NCOs are required to have a Facebook page.

  7. Sorry I'm on my phone I meant career obviously.

Also I wouldn't think 14 yrs TIS should be a big deal

  8. I forgot to leave out the indef part. That's more of the question mark than anything because I can't re-enlist for it. They are still trying to get an answer for me. BN called BDE who is researching it...On another note, what are the senior enlisted promotion rates for 35P? HRC changed their site around and I can't find the past board results.

  9. The MILPER doesn't say anything about being indef, because you're just requesting re-classification. Have you taken the DLAB? If so, what did you score? Are you eligible for a TS-SCI clearance? What is your current MOS? What is the in/out call for the current MOS. Those are the main things you need to figure out.

  10. DLAB score 108. I have a secret. S2 said I shouldn't have too many issues getting the TS SCI. I am a 92A. We are balanced at my grade.

  11. I am SGT/E-5. I am NOT withing my reenlistment window until April 2013. Could I request through 4187 or do I have to wait until I reup? Thank you in advance.

  12. My name is SPC P, my MOS is 92G. In August 2010 I took DLPT for Indonesian Language my scores both reading and listening are 30. In July 2011 I took DLPT test to keep my FLPP, my scores are same 30.
Right now I’m at FOB Salerno since Dec 2011. I’m recently reenlist at 01 March 2012 for 4 years for option “Reenlist for needs of the Army”. I’m trying to reclass to 35P. What should I do? Thank's

    1. I've tried to submit DA4187 (I followed your link)through my counselor and my company but they told me I had to wait when returning from deployment in Afghanistan because they can not submit my security clearance (I do not have security clearance).

      Delete
  14. I can't say for sure with not having a clearance at all, but that sounds like bullshit to me. Get with your BN level S2 and ask if you can submit for a clearance with a justification of reclassifying into a job that requires one.

While I was in Afghanistan I upgraded my Secret to a TS all while deployed (35Ms used to only require a Secret before it switched to TS a few years ago).

The bottom line is, it should be even easier for you. Back then it was all hard copy (2006) with a digital SF86 as well. Now it's all online with e-QIP and it's easy as all hell. If you have internet access and you know all your former addresses and friends, this should be a piece of cake to anyone that knows what they're doing.

That being said, the caveat is, maybe there is some policy over there in place now etc. But usually it shouldn't be an issue.

Think about it like this - what about people who come up for re-investigation while they are deployed? Are they supposed to just wait until they get back too? Sounds hokey.

    1. Your S2 should be able to work with whomever they used in the rear. All of your cleearance stuff should be able to go through even if deployed. With submitting for a TS/SCI, if you don't have one and want to reclass, the army is really cracking down on this. YOU NEED A SIGNED 4187!!! The personnel that work at either your BDE, DIV, or CORP can not help you without this because the personnel that do the investigations will not start the investigation without this paperwork. Also, when doing the eQUIP, it is best to do the SF86 at least on paper (preferibly digits) since you will only have 5 days to complete the eQUIP request online properly. Since you will have completed the SF86, you should be able to complete the online eQUIP in that time easily.

The main thing to take away for trying to reclass to any 35 series MOS is the signed DA 4187. The S2 can not help you without that form signed by your commander.

  15. I got pcs on april. But since i heard of 35p i would like to reclass. I know it requires at least a year time to reclass. However, when i ran into a soldier who is trying to reclass to 35kp. He's been 8months and he is requesting and waiting for top security clearance interim. He said tsc and reclassing to another mos are different matters. I want to know about the detail. What is truth?

  16. Honestly the best person to ask is your career counselor.

  17. Hey SFC J, I have recently passed the D-lab with 114 and got the TS clearance. I want to reclass to be a 35P but I am currently on orders to an Oconus assignment in Jan 2013. how likely would it be for me to to do a voluntary reclass right now. my current mos is over strenght and my reenlisment window opens in 2015.

  18. Honestly this is a better question for your career counselor. Sorry for the late response I was TDY.

  19. If you are 35p Airborne qualified what are the chances you get stationed overseas? Such as Korea, Japan, or Europe? Or do you get a CONUS assignment first?

Secondly, I heard when you reenlist, you can choose your language. Is that true?

    1. Sorry for the late response. I know that you have probably moved on, but I'm going to answer for future Google search results etc. Sorry for that, I was deployed to Afghanistan and did not update this blog that much.

Usually you can choose your language, but BASED on your DLAB score AND the what the Army needs.

As for the assignment, it's whatever the Army needs at the time.

  20. Hey SFC J, i am active duty in a balanced MOS, wanted to re-class to 35P. I have a DLPT 3/2 in french, took a DLAB failed it. My question is can i request a waiver for the DLAB and send my package in? Also i am currently in my reenlistment window.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Definitely you need to talk to your Career Counselor because waivers etc are not something I deal with.

  21. SFC J, do you think there's any way I can find out which reserve units in my area are 35P, so that I can re-class & join 'em? (Just moved to here, so I'm flexible to move again)

Honestly, not sure how to do that. I'd start looking at the National Guard Bureau website and go from there, and find the reserve career counselor in your area.

  25. I received a 3-4 NCOER because of DLPT failure and I was not able to retake it as you know until I have received a significant training event or 150 hours, an when I was finally ready to take it again I got a 3/3 and since my NCOER was due I was rated with a need of improvement and received the 3-4, so, am I also ineligible for reenlistment.
